About The Authors

Andrew Binns

Charles O’Reilly

Michael Tushman

Corporate Explorer is a book twenty years in the making. It started when Andy Binns attended an IBM Strategic Leadership Forum at Harvard Business School led by Professor Michael Tushman and Professor Charles O’Reilly. Mike and Charles were engaged to support IBM’s Emerging Business Opportunity program. Andy had just joined IBM from McKinsey.

One of the leaders they worked with was Carol Kovac, GM for IBM Life Sciences, and the archetypal Corporate Explorer. In just five years the team created something remarkable; a new multi-billion-dollar business inside a corporate behemoth. Living this story, the authors were blessed with the opportunity to learn first-hand what it took to succeed. This has forever shaped their belief that it is possible for corporates to beat startups at innovation, even if they also learned it would not be simple.

BECOME AN EXPLORER

Corporate Explorer looks at what separates out those firms who can reinvent and disrupt themselves from those that cannot. Packed with case examples and practical tools for turning aspirations into commercial reality, it is a must read for anyone truly interested in driving impactful innovation and change.

Conventional wisdom says that disruptive innovation is almost always led by start-ups. Corporate Explorers challenges this orthodoxy. It makes a compelling case that large corporations can create new value by beating start-ups at their own game, and offers an evidence-based blueprint for doing so.
